I’m excited to have my short, short story, “The Girl With Bags Under Her Eyes,” included in this year’s edition of Literary LEO – the annual creative competition sponsored by the Louisville-based arts & entertainment and community-focused publication LEO Weekly. I wrote this a few years ago, daydreaming one lazy afternoon in a coffee shop about how people can drift in and out of our lives without us ever really getting to know them, sad in a way, but hopefully something we can learn from to try and make an effort to connect. Click on the link and scroll down to find it, and check out all the other excellent writing (not to say necessarily that my writing is excellent, but well, you know what I mean), and some really rad photos too – I’m proud to be in such good company!

Hello! I hope the weather is holding up alright wherever you are. It’s cold and dreary in KY, and it’s got me missing concerts, and live music, and mosh pits – so I posted this short story, The Pit, on my Medium page. Throw your hands up in the air and enjoy!
Announcements
Happy New Year, and I hope that 2021 is off to a good start for everyone! I’m excited to announce that I’m going to be a Guest Editor for the upcoming Issue 8 of Fleas on the Dog. This is a really great lit mag, and if you haven’t seen it before, I suggest you check it out. They’ve published a couple of my short stories and one of my plays. And speaking of plays, I’ll be participating in a live discussion on Twitch this Thursday (1/21) at 8 PM EST for my play “Geese” as part of the virtual theatre festival The Big Break. I’ll be joined by the actors and crew, so it should be fun. I’ll post the link once I get it!

I just posted a short story – “Sad Bar” – to my Medium page. I consider this a companion piece to my collection, The Sadie Stories, which (hopefully, knock wood, fingers crossed …) will be out next year after being delayed this year what with everything that’s happened. It’s not actually part of this collection, but it fits within the overarching story, and perhaps at some point I’ll include it in a second collection of stories involving these characters.

I’ve decided to package my short stories from Birchwood Village (there are seven in all) into one collection called (Mostly) True Stories from Birchwood Village and send it out for submission. I’m pleased to announce that Variant Literature has included it in its “longlist of titles that generated significant discussion.” Of course, once this collection of stories lands somewhere for publication I’ll be sure to post about it here!

I’m excited to announce that my short story “Just Like Saint Peter” has been chosen to appear in the inaugural edition of a new lit mag, Blydyn Square Review – look for it sometime in Spring 2021, and as usual I’ll post a link. Also, don’t forgot my Zoom reading this Thursday, Nov 12 @ 6 PM ET for my chapbook Three in the Morning and You Don’t Smoke Anymore – links to registration are available on every page of my website!

Just posted a short short on my Medium page called “Sunday Afternoon.” It’s a piece I wrote last year, based on my observations sitting at a bar (when it was still safe to sit at a bar) and how I was feeling at the time. Have a great week – and try and do something you want to do!

Hello everyone, and Happy Friday! Here’s an afternoon snack (or maybe a morning or evening snack, depending on when and where you’re reading this) to get your weekend going: the opening paragraph of my new novella, Tryouts – inspired by my attempt to make the varsity basketball team when I was a freshman in high school. It was named a Finalist in this year’s Trifecta Competition sponsored by the Iron Horse Literary Review. My plan is to publish it as a chapbook this spring, hopefully to coincide with the college basketball tournament. Enjoy!
There must have been forty of us, maybe fifty, kids of all shapes and sizes, crammed into that stuffy gym after class, the place reeking of sweat and dirty socks and farts, chattering, fidgeting, roughhousing. It was chaos on that Monday afternoon at three-forty-five, the first day of basketball tryouts, all of us vying for only eleven spots on the varsity team. Some clearly wouldn’t make it, some clearly would. And the rest, like me, fell somewhere in-between.

Anyone interested in reading an interview I did about the inspiration behind my new chapbook, Three in the Morning and You Don’t Smoke Anymore, and what I want readers to take away from this collection can find it here.
